What is a ListServe?
A list serve acts as message redirector for a group of subscribers. A
message posted by any member automatically transmits to every other
subscriber. The service is free but you must subscribe.
How to Subscribe
Subscription is a one-time task and is accomplished by
sending an e-mail message to: listserv@listserv.montana.edu. The message
must contain the following text on the first two lines:
subscribe Region8P2
quit
The subject line is ignored by the list server. Please note that "listserv"
is spelled with no final "e".
The subscriber will receive a message confirming that the subscription
has been processed. The message will contain instructions for posting to
the list and signing off the list.
Sending Messages
Only subscribers may post messages to the list. To post to the list, send an e-mail message to: Region8P2@listserv.montana.edu .
Upon receipt of the message the list server will resend it to all subscribers of the list. Note:
If you reply to a message posted on the list, it will go only to
sender of the original message. If you would like your reply
to go to the whole list, you must choose "reply to all" within
your email program.
The following commands can be e-mailed to listserv@listserv.montana.edu:
unsubscribe Region8P2 - to remove yourself
from the list
set Region8P2 nomail - to remain on the list
but stop mail delivery
set Region8P2 mail - to resume mail delivery
The commands must be entered in the body of the mail message starting
at the first line. The commands must be followed by the word quit on the next line of the message so that any additional text in the message
body, like a signature, will be ignored.
Trouble Shooting
If the list serve is experiencing some problem, do not send messages to the list.
This may increase the problem. If you are not sure if the list
administrator is aware of the problem, send an email to one of these two
addresses: wesley.fleming@montana.edu
or owner-Region8P2@listserv.montana.edu
Only subscribers may post messages to the list. If you are a
subscriber and your message is being rejected, this may be because the e-mail address from which you are posting is different
than the address from which you initially subscribed. You may run into the same problem if you use a POP-mail client such as Eudora or Netscape. In such cases, when you set up the mail client, you specify the name and address by which the list server identifies you as a subscriber. Each POP-mail client refers to the return address in different terms. Somewhere in the setup, preferences, or options screen of each of these clients is a field in which you specify the address that the recipients of your messages see as your return address. If you
try to post a message with an e-mail address other than the one the list server saw when you
subscribed, your posting will be rejected.
If you receive an error message in response to a posting attempt, take the following steps to resolve the problem:
- Check your e-mail address to make sure it is correct and the same address that you used to
subscribe to the list.
- If your e-mail address is configured correctly, try next to get a listing of the subscribers to determine under what name you are subscribed. You can obtain such a list by sending the
message:
review Region8P2 to listserv@listserv.montana.edu.
The list server will return a list of subscribers to you. Find your entry on this list and make a note of the full address listed for you. If you are subscribed to the list with an address other than your current e-mail address, you will need to unsubscribe the old address and then
re-subscribe to the list using your current address.
- If you are still unable to post to a list, send an e-mail message to the list owner. For any problems associated with a list or questions about the list, you can send a
regular email message describing your problem to the list owner at:
owner-Region8P2@listserv.montana.edu

How to Unsubscribe:
To unsubscribe from this list, use the email address you were
originally subscribed with and send the following message to Region8P2@listserv.montana.edu:
unsubscribe Region8P2
quit
